General Background:

• Born in Berkeley, CA (1949) and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area
• Served in Vietnam in the Marine Corps, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion
• Served four fire seasons with CDF as a Firefighter and LT Engineer
• Graduated from Humboldt State University with high honors
• Worked in recreation planning and land use planning
• Returned to the fire service, working for Humboldt Fire District for 28 years
• Served as President of IAFF Local 1770
• Taught fire science part-time for 21 years at two community colleges, and in the private sector
• Served in every sworn capacity at HFD, except Assistant Chief.
• Service retirement from HFD November 2004 as Fire Chief

Time Management Expertise:

• Practiced increasingly successful time management and daily planning for 25 years
• Studied "classical" time management as well as recent innovators and dissenters from the classical model.
• Studied a broad range of time management systems and tools
• Personally developed teaching methods and time management strategies specifically targeted to the fire service
• Maintained independence from all time management systems, tools and products, allowing a presentation with no sales pitch.
• Developed a one-day course specifically for fire service personnel, to assist them in the effective use of time
